Yep, my first “official” review here at KTOG! Nearly 1000 posts and nothing of value added so far – I blame it on my half-Irish heritage and the gift of gab!
Anyway, over in the Trading Post, politenessman of Retro-tactical (was GunSaddles.com) was advertising some innovative products for KT firearms; in particular, a “saddle” for the S2K! You know those ammo holders you see that strap around the stock of most rifles or shotguns? Where, here was a system that was designed for the Sub 2000. And as I own such a marvel of modern weaponry, and had a few extra bucks in the old PayPal account, well I took the plunge!
But my request was different; the stock “saddle” had MOLLE webbing, so you can add on accessory pouch you wanted. But I already knew what I wanted – a pair of magazine pouches for the G17 mags to stick in Gumby (the name for my S2K). So I asked – how about making the saddle with the pouches already attached, rather than the webbing? NO problem was the reply!
So I ordered. Given this was a custom product, I was prepared to wait. Given this was ordered a few days before Thanksgiving, I was prepared to wait even longer. Imagine my surprise that Retro-tactical (GunSaddles.com) turned around the order in just a hair over 2 weeks – WOW!
So what did I get? A Kel Tec SUB2000 compatible stock saddle that holds two G17 magazines upside down. I won’t go into the mounting of the saddle, it’s well documented on theretro-tactical (GunSaddles.com) site (if you can’t figure it out, you don’t have the intellectual capacity to handle a firearm).
And here it is mounted on my folded Gumby:

How’s the fit and finish? VERY good! No loose threads, everything is well seamed and stitched, high quality materials. Even the ends of the nylon draw-string are properly melted and rolled. And the Velcro? Usually a pet-peeve of mine, and I didn’t tell Retro-tactical (GunSaddles.com) about it, either! Most of the times, the patches of Velcro used are so small as to be unusable. You have a length difference of a half and inch and you miss the connection! NOT these – it’s full length; we’re talking 3 INCHES of Velcro. Kudos on not skimping on the most important material in the build!

So how’s it function? First off, it fits PERFECTLY. Easy to tighten where shaking Gumby for several minutes didn’t loosen it at all – still nice and tight. And the orientation of the pouches is perfect! You don’t have to twist the rifle at all, or move your grip hand. Reach back and under the bolt tube, pull down on the strap, and the magazine drops into your hand. We’re talking fast and easy changes – I love it!
Not to mention it really balances out the looks:

Looks almost factory, and doesn’t really affect balance at all, since the extra weight is right at the shoulder. If anything it makes the firearm feel even “faster” to pan around. Having a bit of mass back there tucked between your grip and shoulder really makes the front feel light and quick. Slick!
The whole deal was a pleasure – easy to work with, VERY responsive (updates regularly), open to customization, and VERY affordable.
Overall, this is highly recommended – I really like the saddle, it’s worked great (spent some time at the range today), and it’s rugged. For the price, you really cannot go wrong.
