Recently I put together a speedloader pouch for a 6 round, 44 Magnum HKS speedloader, but there are many other sizes of speedloader out there.
I wrote a post back last year about using the 10/22 pouch for speedloaders, and a forum friend of mine – (I hang out a lot at Hotel 23 – AKA tacticalunderground – the forum and website of JL Bourne, author of day by day Armageddon) – was good enough to give me more information on using the 10/22 pouch for speedloaders:
Prognosis: It works. The flap could have about 1″ more length with wider Velcro to do double duty more effectively, if you are loading bullets long, especially Ruger only loads, but it retains and balances well. However, .38 special and .44 special factory loads worked perfectly.
I tested using HKS and Safariland Duty type speed loaders (No way Safariland Competition speed loaders will fit in this thing, they are far too big) and both worked well. The HKS is a little shorter, so fit better.
The 10/22 pouch size is best suited to N-frame large magnums such as the S&W 629, or other .44 or .45 cylinders. The L frame .38/.357 cylinder (7 or 8. Doesn’t matter with this carrier) is a little sloppy, but very workable.
K-frame speed loaders will however need a smaller pouch, as the diameter is just to small, and they slop around dangerously, threatening to fall out.
Considering I am deliberately using the pouch for other than its intended use, It works rather admirably.
So to offer a true speed-loader pouch, it looks like I need to make some minor mods, but essentially we have a speed-loader pouch if you are using L and N frame, but for K frame I might have to put together a smaller pouch. Good to know and a great starting point.
I am always interested in feedback, good and bad regarding anything I have made. Different people have different ideas on what they want and need and often I am surprised by what I find out. Customer feedback is one of the best business tools out there, so keep it coming!
I drafted this post a couple of weeks ago and rather than rewrite the whole thing, I’m going to add a PS at the bottom here – this week I have updated the 10/22 pouch design to give it more velcro and a longer flap, allowing taller speedloaders to be housed within.
